Abstract
Objectives: In the last decade, the population of dental hygienist sharply increased since citizens want to receive more professional and quality oral health care. Although research for occupational health of dental hygienists is being conducted in various fields, there is a need for preventive research on traditional disease based on quantitative measurements. In this study, we proposed that Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) based motion analysis system that can measure motion information to estimate the wrist and hand posture for dental hygienist.

Methods: In order to measure the wrist and hand motion information, the IMU sensor was employed, and designed home-made software to analyze the motion signals during mimicking scaling operations. Especially, The impact of wrist was compared between two groups.

Results: According to the estimated results, the calculated impact of wrist demonstrated significantly difference by employing suggested technique. From the results, the suggested IMU sensor based motion analysis technique showed possibility of quantitative measure to estimate an evidence for understanding how to predict carpal tunnel syndrome with a unsuitable posture during scaling operations.

Conclusions: IMU sensor based motion analysis system has high potential to be utilized for dental hygienist field. we believed that the proposed method will be useful quantitative tool to estimate good and bad posture during scaling operation.
